Godi Gutierrez -- 'you are the future'
-- by Nancy Kimm

"I never was nationalistic and have always felt I am of this planet - called Earth."

Godi Gutierrez was born and raised in the Philippines, but his home and his heart belongs to the world. So much so that he and his wife, Emma, flew all the way to Bombay, India for their own wedding. At the urging of his in-laws, Godi and his wife immigrated to the United States in 1990, settling in San Francisco.

The transition from professional photographer to graphics and web designing can be seen in Godi's work. His web sites reflect his keen sense of what is pleasing to the mind's eye. One has the feeling that Godi arranges text/copy, colors and space to a website, in a similar way an artist applies lines, paints and texture to a canvas - like a work of art - Godi's websites make you stop and reflect on the colors and texture used. Even the large spaces on a page have an appealing aspect.

When I asked Godi to name at least one thing that has enriched his life, he responded with "The Humanist Movement." I found this intriguing since I knew original humanism occurred during the 14th century in Europe, where it had a profound and lasting impact on western humanity and religion.

"The New Humanist Movement" that Godi joined, while living in Manila, had its roots in South America in the 1960s and was based around the thoughts of a writer and thinker from Mendoza, Argentina, named Silo (Mario Rodriguez) and can be best summarized by the following - " ...what does it mean to humanize the earth? It is to surpass pain and suffering; it is to learn without limits; it is to love the reality you build." Their main tenets include equality for all human beings and support for freedom of thought and belief.

Godi pointed out that our personal lives and the life of society are not separate things. And he really seems to speaking from the heart. He is an individual who believes that how you aspire yourself, will determine how you will unfold your life. In Godi's life, there are two pillars that give meaning and orientation to his daily living -- relationship with his Internal Guide and his daily working with the Force.

The purpose for CharityFocus, was not only in perfect step with The Humanist Movement but also in perfect harmony. Consequently, when Godi heard about CharityFocus, he quickly became a volunteer. He has been developing websites on a pro-bono basis for many years and truly appreciates and enjoys the determination and organizational approach that CharityFocus has developed. Currently, Godi is working on several projects with CharityFocus along with evolving the Humanism website. When inspired, he also writes poetry.

Godi Gutierrez is definitely a man who is shaped by his world, just as he strives to shape a better world for the rest of us by challenging ourselves to answer a single fundamental question: Do I want to live - and under what conditions do I want to live? This question then leads to the next logical step - What am I willing to do, to create a life worth living, not only for myself, but also for others in this world.

In just a few days, via email, I have come to know Godi, and in that short time, he already has me thinking more deeply about the world around me. His New Humanism has made me realize that the bright future, we all long for, not only begins with each and every one of us, but the "Now" that we pray and hope for, begins with each "Today." Putting it in his own words, "You are the future; and this future is how you are today. It is how you aspire yourself to be; as you want yourself to unfold. As you will be revealed to yourself -- as you will be revealed to the world. Yes, you are the future, and it is here. Your now is today."
