 The Smiley Group
About Smiley Group: The Smiley Group is a NGO based in Benin, Nigeria, that works to educate local university students of the many tiers of corruption, STDs (HIV/AIDS), STD prevention and prostitution. As rampant corruption has plagued several universities, with lecturers propositioning women for sexual favors in exchange for good grades and guaranteed class passage rates, The Smiley Group works to educate women and men about the potential ramifications of engaging in unprotected sex and prostitution. Sexual relations are still very much a taboo matter, making condom usage nearly nonexistent; if a man or woman were to be found carrying condoms in his/her respective wallet or purse, he/she would be deemed and suffer the consequences of being a 'licentious' person. Nevertheless, The Smiley Group has had measured success in holding smaller forums to educate college students about STD prevention.
How CharityFocus is Helping: Through the proposed website, CharityFocus aims to help The Smiley Group achieve its goals of serving as an educational forum for Nigerian college students, and as an international fundraising platform. With a broader reach, CharityFocus hopes to enable The Smiley Group to expose Nigerian university-level based corruption and ways to debunk several, prominent urban legends encompassing STD transmission and Nigerian bureaucracy.
